PROBLEMS AWIP SOLVES:

African women entrepreneurs in the processing sector are integral to the continent’s growth but face numerous barriers that stifle their potential. These challenges restrict their business expansion, job creation, and economic impact.

African Women in Processing (AWIP) is a major African Union initiative championing women's leadership in industrialization, especially agro-processing, manufacturing, and value addition, by creating platforms for networking, skills, finance access, policy advocacy, and market linkage, fostering economic empowerment and Africa's industrial transformation in line with Agenda 2063 and AfCFTA.

AWIP supports women-led businesses (MSMEs to large corporations) through initiatives like industrial parks (AWIP Uganda), showcasing at trade fairs (IATF), and connecting them with resources to overcome barriers like lack of finance and skills

Why Ghana Is a Powerhouse for Women in Processing?

Ghana has become a leading hub for women in processing due to a strong blend of talent, resources, and supportive systems:

Rich natural resources that offer endless opportunities for value addition across food, beauty, textiles, and manufacturing.

A deep cultural legacy of women leading trade and processing, forming a strong foundation for modern enterprises.

High levels of female entrepreneurship, with women building innovative, competitive, and scalable processing businesses.

Strong support networks, including AWIP, that provide training, mentorship, finance access, and market linkages.

Growing focus on sustainability, with women driving climate-smart, waste-to-value, and circular processing solutions.

Increasing domestic and global demand for high-quality, locally processed Ghanaian products

Market Connectivity

Limited access to markets and quality infrastructure hinders their ability to sell and scale..

Skill Development

There's a gap in acquiring the appropriate skills and knowledge to compete effectively in the industry.

Policy Constraints

A restrictive policy environment further limits their entrepreneurial activities and growth prospects.

Minimal Industrial Role

Despite their pivotal role in traditional food systems, women's involvement in direct industrialization remains marginal, impacting GDP and economic competitiveness.

AWIP SOLUTION FRAMEWORK

AWIP targets women entrepreneurs in the processing sector in Africa, who face challenges in accessing markets, finance, quality infrastructure, skills and knowledge, and who operate in a restrictive policy environment. AWIP’s UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION

AWIP is unique in its approach to women's empowerment in the processing industry. AWIP offers a targeted and comprehensive range of services that are tailored to meet the specific needs of the women entrepreneurs. AWIP is led by women who are champions and have extensive experience in the processing industry, and are passionate about supporting other women to succeed.

Addressing these issues is critical, as enhancing women's participation in industry could significantly boost GDP – with the OECD noting a potential 12% rise by 2030 if gender gaps are closed. Overcoming institutionalized barriers is essential to unlocking the full benefits of industrial development for women (UNIDO 2019).
